Medical professions

If you are interested in a career in medicine, it doesn’t automatically mean that you have to become a doctor or a nurse. There are other jobs that you can study for that still have to do with medicine.

Lab technician

A lab technician works in a hospital lab and runs test and diagnostics. They help figure out what’s wrong with a patient and aide in diagnosing ailments. In order to become a lab technician you either need an associate degree in science or you can look into a college diploma in the field.

EMT

An emergency medical technician responds to 911 calls and medical emergencies. The job is fast-paced and can be stressful since a lot of the time it’s a life or death situation. Once you finish your EMT course and training there is an EMT exam that you have to pass before you can become certified.

Dental assistant

A dental assistant assists a dentist during procedures. They also take oral x-rays, clean teeth and provide education to patients. In order to become a dental assistant you need to take a course at a dental assistant school. The course, on average, lasts nine months.

Anesthesiologist assistant

This is a fairly new medical profession. As an anesthesiologist assistant, you’ll be assisting a certified registered nurse anesthesiologist, acting as a specialized physician’s assistant. Training for this position can be long, sometimes requiring a master’s degree in the field.

Ultrasound technician

As an ultrasound technical you will gather information from performing ultrasounds. This information will help doctors diagnose different diseases, conditions and illnesses. You will also use your skills to track fetal development in pregnant women. In order to become an ultrasound technician, you will need to take a course. The length of the course varies.

This is just the tip of the iceberg of the medical professions that are out there. Each one of them is challenging and rewarding in its own way.
